Safety Guidance

Your safety matters when meeting someone, visiting land, or welcoming homesteaders onto your property.. When meeting in person, choose a busy public location whenever possible, such as a coffee shop, library, or community center. If a homesteader is staying on your land, meet them first in a public place when appropriate, set clear expectations, and avoid sharing sensitive information such as alarm codes or financial details. Consider sharing your live location and arranging a check-in time. Before meeting, take time to verify the person and the details of the listing or visit—review their profile, communicate through the platform when possible, and ask questions if anything seems unclear. When visiting land, stay aware of your surroundings, respect posted boundaries, and avoid entering unfamiliar areas alone. Trust your instincts: if something feels off, leave the situation, end the conversation, or contact local emergency services if you feel unsafe.

Safety tip of the week

When you're helping out on a farm or homestead, you might come across fertilizers, pesticides, or cleaning products — always keep them in their original labeled containers, and never pour them into food or drink bottles. Store them up high or behind a closed door, out of reach of kids and pets, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling them. If you're not sure what something is or how to use it safely, just ask the landowner before touching it.
